6 Week Solo Improvisation running 19th October – 29th November, it offers a weekly window for your solo improvisation practice

Whatever your relation to improvisation is: improvisation as a regular practice; as performance;  as a tool for making; as a research strategy.

This 6 Week programme aims to nourish your practice within a culture of mutual respect, support and kindness.

Artists working in and across all creative practices, choreographers, directors, writers, composers, designers making new performance work within or across any performance discipline (dance, theatre, performance, circus, music, theatre) who are committed to pushing the boundaries of their own process and practice within a mutually supportive context. 
Artists working solely with text, sound and visual culture are also encouraged to apply. 

You will have:

  • 5 x Group Meetings facilitated by Caroline Salem. Exact dates and time to be scheduled to suit all participants
  • 2 x 1 hour 1:1 Creative Mentoring Sessions online or in-person with Caroline Salem
  • Final work-in-progress streamed or in-person sharing

10 Week Programme is back this Autumn from October 5th to Dec 13th 2026

This Autumn we are gathering a group that meets in London.

Each artist will have the opportunity for dialogue with fellow performance makers, 1:1 sessions with Caroline, option of use of work spaces : Large Studio or Skyroom (London) and house in Devon and a final work-in-progress sharing event in person in London.

For Independent Performance makers/writers working in and across all creative contexts choreography, music, performance, fiction, non fiction , poetry, film, theatre.

There is NO expectation that you will use studio space or have access to other studio space,  artists have been working at home, outdoors or in other spaces

SUMMER RESIDENCIES: AUGUST 3rd – SEPTEMBER 6th 2026

For Independent Performance Makers – dance, music, theatre, circus, performance art, spoken word and now with an added offer to writers or digital/ visual artists.

This year with the choice of our Large Studio Space or Skyroom (small solo writing, digital/visual artspace).
7 days of personal studio or skyroom time combined with either in-person OR virtual work-in-progress meetings and mentoring. The week culminates in a studio sharing (max 5 invited guests per artist) combined with live-streamed or solely virtual event.

Year of Making 2026 offers the option of being part of an in-person or online group of artists who meet regularly. It is ideal for artists/companies/collectives working within and across all performance disciplines including dance, performance, theatre, circus, music, writing and poetry, who are committed to pushing the boundaries of their own process and practice within a mutually supportive context. Both emerging and established artists/companies are welcome to apply.

The residency runs from January 2026 to January 2027, and combines:

– regular meetings with other artists (in person or online)
– optional studio time
– individual mentoring
– informal work-in-progress sharings

Nov 1st – Dec 3rd 8th 2023

Delve, draft, test, question, discard, run with or keep for later. This month programme encourages rawness, risk and reflection, and ensures that everyone’s work will be respected and supported equally.

It includes:

  • 5 x Group Meetings facilitated by Caroline Salem, 3 hrs each. Exact dates and time to be scheduled to suit all participants
  • 2 x 1 hour 1:1 Creative Mentoring Sessions with Caroline Salem
  • Final work-in-progress sharings for a small invited audience

Optional use of studio is also available.

This summer, we have a variety of residencies to choose from: either in person or online, and of different lengths. With a combination of work-in-progress meetings and mentoring, final work-in-progress sharings and personal studio time (for in-person residencies), these programmes offer a place where rawness, roughness and risk are encouraged and where everyone’s work will be respected and supported equally.

Running from January 2024 to January 2025, this programme will combine regular meetings with other artists, informal work-in-progress sharings and mentoring. In addition there is the option of using studio space at Clarence Mews and /or taking time in our Coastal Retreat

One 50% bursary available for an applicant who is either under 25 years or over 65 years.
